Room 1b. The Prehistory of Man

Here are exhibited the finds documenting the early stages of human presence in the Valdarno, which goes from around 700,000 years ago up to the Bronze Age. During this very long era, in which Homo erectus, Homo Neandertalensis and Homo Sapiens took turns over the background of profound climatic changes, substantial progresses were made technically and economically. For example some chipped stone tools witness the presence of temporary settlements of Paleolithic and Mesolithic hunters as well as harvesters on the hills overlooking the alluvial plains, followed by the first permanent settlements of farmers and breeders crafting pottery and metal tools.
