Mission and history

The mission

1. The Museo di Fucecchio is a permanent no-profit public institution, operating for the protection, conservation and exploitation of cultural heritage, according to the principles of the Statuto del Comune di Fucecchio and to national and regional laws.

2. The Museum works for the cultural and social development of citizen, through criteria of impartiality and  respect of any opinion. It promotes, altogether with other public institutions, the effectiveness and improvement of access to the cultural heritage of the territory.

3. The Museo Civico e Diocesano di Fucecchio follows the definition of the ICOM “A museum is a no-profit, permanent institution in the service of society and its development, open to the public, which acquires, conserves, researches, communicates and exhibits the tangible and intangible heritage of humanity and its environment for the purposes of education, study and enjoyment”, related to the history of the town of Fucecchio, from the origins to the present, in connection with other towns.

Since 2004 the museum plans  conservation, research and exploitation activities of the archaeological, artistic and natural heritage  of the surrounding territory in collaboration with the Soprintendenza Archeologia Belle Arti e Paesaggio and the Universities of Firenze and Pisa.

Educational activity is mainly dedicated to the population of the area, of any age, through practical activities, guided visits, stages et cet.  

Exhibitions,  presentations and lectures  are occasions for a better knowledge of the collections and the history of the territory and for the cultural growth of citizens and visitors.

The museum also collaborates to special projects dedicated to various kind of public altogether with other institutions and associations.

History of the Museum

In the 50s of the last century, during the recovery of cultural activities after the Second World War, the project of the museum starts, thanks to the collaboration of the Community of Fucecchio with the Soprintendenza alle Belle Arti di Firenze and the Diocese of San Miniato

1969

On May 25, in the old Chaiapel of the Misericordia on the Poggio Salamartano the Museum opens as a sacred art museum.

1975

Starting of the first archaeological researches.

1978

The Community of Fucecchio buy the Adolfo Lensi (1855-1930) natural collection with 300 specimen form the Fucecchio Marshland.

1981

The Community of Fucecchio buy the Corsini Park and Palace.

1983

Opening of the first archaeological room of the Museum.

1989

The Museum closes due to the sale of the venue to the Collegiate Church of San Giovanni Battista.

1993

Start of the project of the new museum to be hosted in his new see of Corsini Palace.

2004

On March 6th the renovated and enlarged Museum opens to the public.
